What is an overactive bladder
Does your bladder tend to ‘run the show’?
Many people joke about “knowing every toilet in town,” but when urgency or frequency starts to control your day, it can be genuinely draining.
Overactive bladder (OAB) is characterised by a sudden, strong urge to pass urine, needing to go more often than usual, or sometimes leaks before you get to the toilet.
The causes vary. It can develop after childbirth, surgery, infection, or hormonal changes, and can also be influenced by hydration,
Treatment for OAB is tailored to you, but may include:
- Education and self-management advice – understanding how bladder habits, hydration, and lifestyle affect urgency and frequency.
- Bladder retraining/drill – teaching the bladder to hold urine for longer and reduce frequent trips to the toilet.
- Pelvic floor rehabilitation – improving coordination and strength where necessary.
- Relaxation and breathing techniques – calming the nervous system and reducing bladder sensitivity.
- Transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) – a gentle, non-invasive therapy that helps reduce urgency and frequency.
- Our goal is to restore normal bladder patterns and gradually re-educate better habits, helping you get through the day (and night) without your bladder calling the shots.
