What is endometriosis
Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other areas of the pelvis
Such as around the bladder, bowel, ovaries, or pelvic walls.
Pain can show up in many different ways: period pain that’s more severe or lasts longer than expected, pelvic or lower back pain, discomfort during or after sex, or pain with bowel or bladder movements. Some people also experience fatigue, bloating, or flare-ups that make everyday life unpredictable.
While physiotherapy can’t treat the endometrial tissue itself, it plays an important role in managing symptoms and improving quality of life. We focus on easing the effects endometriosis can have on the muscles, nerves, and movement patterns in the pelvis and helping calm the nervous system.
Your treatment plan is completely individual but may include:
- Education and self-management advice – understanding pain mechanisms and strategies for flare-up management.
- Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) – a gentle electrical therapy that can help reduce pain and provide relief during flare-ups.
- Pelvic floor rehabilitation – re-educating overactive or protective muscle tension and improving coordination.
- Myofascial and soft tissue release – gentle techniques to ease restriction, improve mobility, and reduce pain.
- Relaxation and breathing techniques – calming the nervous system and improving body awareness.
- Bladder and bowel retraining – supporting better function if urgency or discomfort are part of your symptoms.
- Functional rehabilitation – helping you return to movement and exercise safely, without flare-ups.
- Scar tissue management – if you’ve had laparoscopic or abdominal surgery related to endometriosis
